Will AI Take Over Sales?
Sep 02, 2026As I've connected with sales leaders and business owners over the last year, one question keeps coming up:
"Do you think AI is going to take over sales someday?"
It's an interesting question because it reminds me of another conversation from early in my career. When the internet became mainstream, I was in my early 20s working in sales. At the time, people were asking:
"Do you think customers will actually place orders online instead of calling customer service?"
Back then, the thought seemed almost ridiculous. People liked talking to someone. They wanted help. They wanted reassurance. Fast forward a few more years.
I recently stumbled across an old recorded interview I did for a software company I worked for at the time. This was before podcasts were even called podcasts. The host asked me a question that made me laugh as I listened back to it years later:
"How important do you think mobile ordering will be in the future?"
At the time, the discussion was centered around whether companies really needed to invest in making their websites responsive so customers could place orders from their phones. Building mobile applications was expensive, smartphones were still evolving, and many people questioned whether customers would ever want to order that way.
Looking back, it sounds almost silly. Today, most of us order products, pay bills, book appointments, and run entire businesses from our phones. What felt like a "future possibility" became an everyday expectation. The companies that embraced the change adapted and grew. The companies that ignored it eventually found themselves playing catch-up.
That is exactly how I view AI. The question isn't whether AI will change sales. It will! The real question is whether sales professionals and organizations will adapt along with it.
So when people ask me if AI will change sales, my answer is simple:
Absolutely!
Sales roles will evolve and adapt just like they have over the last 30 years. I've watched the industry adapt to online ordering, e-commerce, retail disruption, CRM systems, marketing automation, call centers, social selling, and virtual meetings. Every one of those innovations changed how sales professionals worked.
The best sales professionals didn't fight the change. They learned it. They embraced it...And they found ways to become more valuable because of it.
Will AI Replace Salespeople?
My answer is no. At least not in most industries.
Could AI replace some sales roles? Absolutely.
If your primary role is simply taking orders, providing basic information, or answering questions that a prospect can find online, then AI will likely replace some of that work.
But most business-to-business sales roles are much more complex than that.
Customers still need:
- Guidance
- Perspective
- Problem-solving
- Strategic thinking
- Trust
- Human connection
AI can provide information, summarize data and automate tasks. But AI cannot replace the confidence a buyer gains when speaking with someone who understands their business, their challenges, and their goals.
The sales process will change. How sales professionals interact with prospects will change. But in most industries, the need for a trusted advisor will remain.
AI Is Raising the Bar
What I believe AI will do is force sales professionals to become better. And honestly, I embrace that.
For years, many salespeople have survived by being order takers or relationship managers. The problem is that AI can now handle many of the tasks associated with those roles. If all you do is process orders, provide pricing, or repeat information from a brochure, you're vulnerable. But if you can teach, challenge, advise, and provide insight? You're more valuable than ever.
The future belongs to sales professionals who can help buyers think differently.
What Will Need to Change?
1. Product Knowledge Will Matter More Than Ever
Sales professionals must know their products, services, and industries at a deeper level. Prospects no longer need a salesperson to read them a brochure, they can get that information from your website, ask AI or can what a YouTube video. Your job is to help them understand something they don't already know. Teach them about risks they haven't considered, show them opportunities they're missing and help them identify gaps that are costing them time, money, productivity, or growth.
The salesperson who teaches will outperform the salesperson who pitches.
2. Insight Will Become More Valuable Than Information
Information is becoming free, Insight is becoming valuable. Think about the difference:
Information says: "Our product/service has this feature."
Insight says: "Companies that struggle with this process typically lose X amount of productivity each year."
One communicates a feature, the other creates curiosity. The future salesperson must be able to connect the dots for the customer.
3. Your Voice Still Matters
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people allowing AI to completely replace their voice.
People can tell!!! (look at all the "em dashes") Use AI to improve grammar, organize your rambled thoughts, brainstorm your ideas.... but don't lose your personality, your personal stories or your perspective! The things that make you different are often the things that make people trust you.
4. Authenticity Will Matter More, Not Less
Ironically, the more AI-generated content people see, the more they crave authentic human interaction. (READ THAT AGAIN!)
People want to know:
- Have you actually done this?
- Have you seen this problem before?
- Can you help me avoid mistakes?
- Do you understand my situation?
5. Embrace AI Instead of Fighting It
The sales professionals who struggle most will be the ones who refuse to learn it. AI is not the enemy, its just a new tool.
- Research prospects
- Summarize meetings
- Draft emails
- Create follow-up plans
- Analyze data
- Generate ideas
The goal isn't to replace your thinking. The goal is to help you think faster and work smarter.
My Final Thought
I don't believe AI will eliminate sales. I believe it will eliminate average sales behaviors. The future sales professional will need to be more knowledgeable, more strategic, more insightful, and more valuable than ever before. That's not something to fear but rather embrace.
Because at the end of the day, people still buy from people they trust...And trust has never been artificial.
